Hi Brenda!
I suggest you call the Adoption Unit at (787) 724-8585 and ask for either Norma Fernández or Zaida Hernández. You already spoke with the former, and the latter is usually assigned the stateside cases at the San Juan office. Keep in touch!

We called the adoption unit on 6/10/04 they said we have to wait for them to assign package. I was wondering does anybody know how long this entire process usually takes. Will be grateful for any input.

Brenda:
The process to assign the case take a few weeks but my best recomedation is to call every week just to let them know your interest in adopting. Trust me that worked wonders with me.

Hi Brenda
In our case, it took about five months from the initial paperwork submission to the call that they had a child for us, then thirteen months until the adoption hearing in court.

Hi Iana.
Thanks for responding. I see it is a long process . Were you able to bring the child home before the court proceeding or were you able to interact with the child during this time. Please fill me in a little on how it was for you.

Hi Brenda:
The process for us a little it longer I got my little sun almost one year after submiting our request for adoption then it took another year for the finalization of the adoption process. Our case was a little different because eventhough Ara was with us theere was some relatives fighting 4 her custudy at court, they even got to the Supreme Court of PRuntil Oct 20 2003 when we had the release from ADFAN to request the adoption. Since we request the adoptoin at court until the end of the process it took 120 days. That is the legal limit of time to finish this kind of process.
In response to the other question Ara was wityh us since the moment the department placed her so it was a year before we finish the process at court.
In conclusion fron the reuest top adopt in the department until the end of the adoption it took us 2 years.
hope this answer your question

IANA, WOW THAT WAS A LONG PROCESS. IM SURE IT MUST HAVE BEEN AN EMOTIONAL STRUGGLE AFTER BEING SO LONG WITH THE CHILD AND THEN THE RISK OF LOSING THEM IT COULD BE PRETTY DEVASTATING. CONGRATULATIONS ON THE FINALIZATION OF THE ADOPTION. I HOPE THAT THIS PROCESS WORKS OUT FOR US,BECAUSE OUR PREFERENCE IS A PUERTORICAN CHILD. I DIDNT WANT TO GO INTERNATIONAL BECAUSE IT TAKES TO LONG AND YOU WOULD HAAVE TO STAY 1-2 MONTHS IN THAT COUNTRY. I WOULDNT MIND STAYING IN P.R. IF I HAD TO FOR A LITTLE WHILE .I HAVE FAMILY THERE SO IT WOULDNT BE SO HARD ON US.

Brenda:
Yes it was some kind of mixed feelings at first but then u pray to God and he gives you the strength to carry on. This doesn't mean that all adoptions are so long, I think the average time on an adoption between the beginning and the end is 1 year at tops including the legal process.
I hope you will find the child of your dreams as we did, also remember my advice always call often to let them know you are very interested.
good luck

:(WELL I TRIED CALLING ADFAN FOR ABOUT A WEEK .TODAY I FINALLY WAS ABLE TO TALK TO SOMEONE BECAUSE NORMA/ZAIDA WERE IN THE FIELD.I AM FEELING VERY DISCOURAGED.I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAVE A LOT OF HOMESTUDIES FROM OUTSIDE OF PUERTO RICO. THE PRIORITY IS FROM PR FIRST(understandable)THEY HAVE A LOT OF HOMESTUDIES FROM PR. I NEVER FOUND OUT IF MY HOMESTUDY WAS ASSIGNED BECAUSE NOBODY KNOWS.I UNDERSTAND THE ADOPTION PROCESS IS A LONG ONE ,BUT I THINK NOTHING IS GOING TO MATERIALIZE HERE. THEY ARE PROBABLY VERY BUSY WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE THERE, WICH IS FINE. I PERSONALY AM GETTTING KNOW WHERE.
