I'm new to the forum and have been reading that its almost impossible to adopt an infant. I've also been told this by a social worker at the Dept of the Family. Are there agencies in PR that do infant adoptions? THANKS

Hi Vicky and welcome to this forum. I hope you'll find it enlightening and encouraging in your adoption quest.
I'd like to know just where have you been reading up that "its almost impossible to adopt an infant". This has been going on for some time as hearsay, but aside from some ill-timed interviews to celebrities who have the $ and the impatience to shop around for a foreign adoption, I have not read anything as such anywhere, and I've been monitoring the media on adoption for almost five years now.
I have to stress this: Don't make a rash assumption based on somebody else's comments. As the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan used to say, "Everyone is entitled to his own opinions, but no one is entitled to his own facts." Although not many infants (meaning ages 0-2) are placed for adoption from foster care in Puerto Rico, there are cases of such placements all year long in all the DF regions. Remember that (a) many children outgrow their infancy by the time they are legally released from their bio parents and available for adoption, and (b) demand and supply makes younger children less available for placement.
I can't tell from what you share the context in which the SW you mention affirmed this. A casual conversation may be very different to a formal orientation on what you can expect when you put an application to become a candidate to adopt a child.
There are a couple local agencies that market themselves as purveyors of infants to prospective parents, but be warned that their waiting lists are long, and the financial capacity of the adopting family can be an important factor in the placement decision.
Bottom line on this, if you were presented with a child, say two, three, four years old, still preschool, and matched your expectations in every other way, would the fact that this child might be out of diapers a deal breaker? After all, every child will outgrow its infancy, and holding on to the image of an "ideal baby" might be delaying the arrival of a very real, already born, already available sweet child that may be the perfect match for you. Vicky, don't give up on starting adoption procedures locally just because they can't guarantee you a baby. Don't approach it like that. There is a child for you, of unknown age, who needs and deserves the unconditional love of someone who has the vocation of being a loving parent. A baby, maybe. A child, definitely. Yours, someday...? Well GO FOR IT. We have the information for you to make an informed decision. And as adoptive parents ourselves, we'll be rooting for you all the way.

Sam, thanks for your reply. You are very true in the words that you spoke! I will send the homestudy in and attempt to be patient. We visit PR quite often so maybe I will have to become a pest at the Dept of Family! We live in CA so talking with agencies about Puerto Rican or even 1/2 PR infants is a foreign concept to many of them. I have also called a few agencies in FL and they appear to be a bit more helpful but like you said, "waiting lists are long, and the financial capacity of the adopting family can be an important factor in the placement decision"
Again, thanks for rattling my cage and shaking me back to reality!

Vicky:
Sometimes you shouldn't belive everything they say. To adopt an infant in PR isn't difficult just that they have a big demand. I know a lot of people that have adopt infants in PR, but we have to break those myths about adoption. We always say that adoption isn't difficult but as big knowledgement you have about adoption the process is less stressful.
Almost everybody wants an infant (that is a big assumption but let's make it real) so they lists are very long. But in PR they are various agencies like Adoption Caribbean Services in Mayaguez and Dr. Mary Rivera that works with voluntary dropoffs.
So you have many places to check out and never assume anything....

Also, do you have contact info for Dr. Rivera? Thanks for all your help

hi Lucresia, I am currently a foster parent that recently adopted a previous foster child and am fostering - planning to adopt end of this year. Had them since they were babies , now in their "beautifuly twos " Depending on the town that you will be moving is the office that you need to go to. Foster parents are really needed in PR. So really appreciate you doing so! If you want to contact me further you can email me at marisolpr_1@yahoo.com regards Marisol
